Today I'd like to focus our study of climate and weather on a particular phenomenon that affects all geographical areas in the world: "wind." In particular I'd like to talk about common wind patterns near coasts, especially ocean shorelines where large bodies of water and large land masses meet.

On the typical day there are two types of wind along a coast: a sea breeze and a land breeze. The first type, a sea breeze, blows from the ocean in towards the land. It usually begins around mid-morning and lasts into the evening. So you could basically call it a "day breeze." It also tends to be much stronger than a land breeze. The second type of wind, the land breeze, reverses the course of the sea breeze: it blows from the land out to sea. A land usually begins in the night and lasts until early morning, so you could also call this a "night breeze."

Both types of winds are caused by rising and falling temperatures. As you know, heat rises, and land heats up under the sun more quickly than water does. So, for example, as the sun shines on land in mid-morning, heat rises from the land and cooler air from the ocean rushes in to take its place. Therefore, this movement causes the sea breeze. In the night, the process is reversed as the land cools off more quickly than the sea. As a result, cool air from the land moves out to the ocean.

This same principle of warm air rising is the key principle for storm formation?particularly thunderstorms. And that's the topic you'll read about in your textbook tonight and that we'll discuss in class tomorrow.
